CUMO Mine News
11/30/2009
KTVB, Boise Channel 7, aired a feature story about the proposed CUMO molybdenum mine on November 24, bringing needed attention to a massive project that threatens the Boise River.

Idaho Rivers United, in conjunction with our allies in Idaho Families for Clean Water, has been monitoring the active exploration at the CUMO site north of Idaho City for two years. A Canadian company, Mosquito Gold, has been drilling 24-7 on the 7,000 acre prospect in the upper reaches of Grimes Creek, just a stone's throw from the divide between the Boise and Payette River basins.

Mosquito Gold claims the site is the largest unmined open-pit moly deposit in the world.

The proposed open pit mine would dwarf Idaho's Thompson Creek Mine near Challis and would have permanent effects on land, water, fish and wildlife. Water pollution from the massive mine, the waste rock piles and the tailings could enter Lucky Peak Reservoir and the lower Boise River.

More information and a CUMO mine fact sheet can be found in our Boise River section.
