Idaho hosts hearings on amendments to State Water Plan

Earlier this month I attended the first in a series of public hearings held by the Idaho Water Resource Board about the proposed addition of a Sustainability Policy to the state water plan.
We applaud the governor for having the foresight to notice and recommend the need for this policy. IRU believes, however, that it is missing some critical components.
It’s time for innovative planning and management strategies that consider climate change and ensure healthy, clean water and ample in-stream flows. The policy is ultimately business as usual and pushes continued development of Idaho’s water. Contrary to its title, the policy as it stands does not consider climate change, water quality, healthy rivers, public health or recreational assets.
It’s time for Idahoans to look to the future and shift how we use our resources. One size does not fit all. Consider the quality and quantity of the waters that supply our family homes and small businesses together with the demands of industry and development of the state. Consider the context of each water source and basin and be sensitive to the community and the health of the system it supports today as well as the expectations for the future.
Idaho has an opportunity to maintain the unique character of its rivers and natural resources along with its cities and small towns. IRU encourages you to attend a public hearing or submit comments to the Idaho Water Resource Board.
You can find the schedule here. If you cannot attend please submit your comments by email to; by postal mail to IWRD, ATTN: SWP, PO Box 83720-0098, Boise, ID 83720-0098; or through testimony at any of the scheduled public hearings. The comment period is open through Sept. 30.
