Idaho Statesman reporter Rocky Barker is on a journey to report about tragically low numbers of returning salmon. Barker and videographer Ali Rizvi (a McClatchy colleague who received a Pulitzer Prize for work on a Panama Papers story) are embarking on a five-month voyage to investigate what is plaguing wild salmon populations in the Columbia River Basin, and in turn plaguing our culture.
In the first article along the path, Barker highlights the history of salmon recovery efforts, river and oceanic habitat conditions and, importantly, dam removal. Stay tuned for more information about the unfolding salmon tragedy. You can follow Barker's work on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to keep up with what he and his team unearth along the way.
