Our Strategy

We take a comprehensive look at the dynamic forces that impact rivers and fish, including dams, mining, and municipal water use all around the state. We work to help implement sustainable water policy. We initiate local campaigns, teach the public about river conservation, and keep protections intact for future generations through clear communications grounded in science.

  • Our work incorporates four major areas:

    • dams & energy

    • native fish species

    • water policy; and

    • wild rivers and watersheds.

    • We accomplish strong and effective conservation through working with various stakeholders on different projects in an attempt to steer the outcomes in order to maintain, improve, and safeguard the quality of our rivers for all species who depend on them. These stakeholders often look like federal agencies, tribal governments, private industry, and recreationists alike.

  • We advocate by working directly with government agencies and other organizations on behalf of our rivers. We collaborate with organizations and communities to build solutions that work for varying groups but still protect rivers and native species.

  • We educate our members, river guides, and communities so that they too can make decisions based on facts about their rivers and promote water conservation in our state.

  • When necessary, we litigate and rally river enthusiasts or use the courts to push for responsible stewardship, clean water protection, restoration of native species, sustainable resources, balanced water use, and protection of Idaho’s rivers, waterways, and native species. This ensures that future generations will be able to experience the wild rivers and beauty of Idaho.

Our Vision

Our vision is an Idaho with clean, free flowing rivers that support the communities, people, fish and wildlife that depend on them, and citizens motivated to protect their rivers for future generations.

Idaho Rivers United’s 2024-2028 Strategic Plan is here.

We look forward to working together to achieve our goals in the coming years.
